What is Directive (EU) 2026/805?
The EU's most significant update to water quality legislation in 15 years. It amends the Water Framework Directive and Environmental Quality Standards Directive, adding 25 new priority substances (including PFAS, pharmaceuticals and neonicotinoids), revising EQS for 14 existing substances, and creating a new framework for river basin specific pollutants (RBSP).
Compliance deadline
EQS enforcement starts 22 December 2027. Transposition deadline is 21 December 2027. Supplementary monitoring for newly listed substances (No.46–70) must be established by the same date.
Who does it affect?
Any industrial operator, water utility, or public authority that discharges to or abstracts from EU surface water bodies. The transposition deadline is 21 December 2027 — the same date EQS enforcement begins.
